Seventeen-year-old Victoria Duval is a true champion. The young tennis player recently competed and won the biggest upset in the US Open so far when she triumphed over former champion Samantha Stosur. She won her first ever Grand Slam victory (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) after coming back from 35 unforced errors.
“I just tried to stay in the moment,” Victoria told ESPN after the match. “I don’t know, I’m just really excited right now.”
Victoria’s strength endures beyond the tennis courts. Her father had to be dug out of rubble after nearly being buried alive during the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Victoria herself was visiting an aunt when armed robbers held her and her family for hours.
“I am lucky to be here,” Victoria said. “My family is lucky.”
Congratulations on the win!
