Most people would agree that getting a chance to work with one of your favorite musical artists would be a huge dream come true. For one teenager, her dream became a reality. Sixteen-year old Ebony Oshunrinde produced the track Crown on Jay-Z’s latest album, Magna Carter Holy Grail.
During an interview with CBC The National, Ebony (A.K.A. WondaGurl) stated that she became inspired to make beats when she was 9-years-old after watching a video a video of Jay-Z and Timbaland in the studio. “There’s a video with Jay-Z and [Timbaland] in the studio. So I was like I want to do what Timbaland does. [...]” she said.
When she was 14, the young producer entered Toronto’s Battle of The Beatmeakers competition and performed well. She was eliminated during the quarterfinals. The following year Ebony entered the competition again and won and was signed to the Black Box.
Black Box and rapper DJ Travis Scott helped Ebony get a track on the Magna Carter Holy Grail album. “A few days after, [DJ Travi$ Scott] messaged me and said ‘I’m about to change your life.’ He called me actually and then said you’re on Jay-Z’s album and like congratulations […] I felt like crying,” ebony stated.
Now that Ebony has working with a legendary artist under her belt, she’d like to continue producing tracks and possibly win a Grammy. She wants to spread the word to girls and young women that the sky’s the limit. “You can do anything that you want. Not even in music, in anything that is male dominated, you can do it. Just try, Ebony said.
